This is a clarification. In class yesterday I mentioned that the original name of the modern city of Los Angeles was La Ciudad de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, but after some brief research I wish to correct that to El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora, la Reina de los Angeles del Rio Porciuncula, or “The Town of Our Lady, Queen of the Angels of the Porciuncula River”.
This was L.A.’s name during its period as a mission town under the Spanish Empire and subsequently under the Republic of Mexico, after the war for independence. The Porciuncula River, is better known today as the Los Angeles River, although it was itself originally named El Río de Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula.
So if we wanted to get technical about it we could say that the original name of the city today known as Los Angeles is : El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora, la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula.
( I should put this on the test)
